Ice Fest Beginner-Friendly Ice Climbing Adventure
Ever wondered what it’s like to swing an ice tool into a frozen pillar and climb straight up a winter wall? Ice Fest is the perfect place to find out. In partnership with brands like Black Diamond and Petzl, Rock Spot makes ice climbing accessible, welcoming, and exciting for both first-timers and experienced climbers.
Ice climbing at Ice Fest means scaling beautiful frozen formations tucked into the mountains of New Hampshire, with expert guidance every step of the way. Through this annual festival, Rock Spot provides essential technical gear, experienced instructors, an accessible climbing venue, and lodging options so participants can focus on having a safe, unforgettable adventure. Owner Larry Norin has attended every year, bringing decades of experience and a deep passion for ice climbing that helps set the tone for the entire event.

Where Ice Fest Happens

Ice Fest takes place in the Flume Gorge, a natural gorge stretching roughly 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. Known for its towering rock walls and dramatic scenery, the gorge transforms into a striking winter playground once the temperatures drop.
Navigating the area in winter conditions can be challenging, especially for newer climbers. Rock Spot helps remove the guesswork. Detailed information about meeting locations, schedules, and safety procedures is clearly outlined on the Rock Spot website. Designated meeting points make it easy for participants to check in, gear up efficiently and safely, and then head into the gorge together to climb.

Gear Rock Spot Provides

Rock Spot supplies all of the essential technical equipment needed for ice climbing. If you don’t have your own gear, they’ve got you covered with:
  • Ice climbing boots
  • Crampons
  • Ice axes
  • Harnesses
This takes the pressure off investing in specialized gear before you know if ice climbing is for you.

What to Wear and Bring

While Rock Spot covers the technical gear, personal clothing, and layering choices are just as important for staying comfortable outside all day. Dressing in layers allows climbers to regulate body temperature and moisture while hiking and climbing in cold conditions.
Start with:
  • A synthetic, moisture-wicking base layer worn directly against the skin to keep sweat away from your body
  • One or more insulating mid-layers that can be added or removed throughout the day

On top of that, plan to bring:

  • Warm, waterproof gloves or mittens (consider a backup pair)
  • Thick, warm socks
  • Hand and foot warmers to keep extremities comfortable
  • A balaclava or face covering to protect your face from wind and cold
  • Climbing gaiters to keep snow, mud, and brush off your legs while hiking and climbing
  • A headlamp, especially for cloudy days or late-afternoon finishes, to help light the trail on the hike back through the gorge

These small details can make a big difference in how enjoyable your day on the ice feels.

Ice Climbing Opportunities for Every Skill Level

Rock Spot offers a range of Ice Fest experiences tailored to different goals and skill levels.
For beginners, half-day sessions are a great place to start. These approximately five-hour experiences are available in the morning or afternoon, giving new climbers plenty of time to learn the basics, get comfortable with the gear, and spend quality time on the ice without feeling rushed.
For intermediate and advanced climbers, Rock Spot provides full-day experiences that run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. These sessions offer more time on the ice, the chance to refine technique, and opportunities to tackle more challenging routes under the guidance of experienced instructors.
Whether you’re clipping into crampons for the first time or looking to push your skills on steeper terrain, there’s an Ice Fest option designed for you.
