The Basics

No Experience Necessary

When we say walk-ins are welcome, we mean it.

All of our climbing gyms feature world class bouldering with our full-service facilities providing a more traditional climbing experience with taller walls and roped climbing options.

Regardless of which facility you climb in, there are climbing routes designed by our incredible setting teams that provide an accessible start to your climbing journey. Our staff will cover the basics and get out of your way so you can enjoy your session to the fullest.

Bouldering

Bouldering is form of climbing that is low to the ground that does not require ropes. There are extra thick pads that our staff will teach climbers how to properly land on to manage their risk and because no ropes are involved, the only equipment you’ll need are climbing shoes, which you can rent for the day.

While boulder routes are typically not as long as a roped climb, our setters use their climbing experiences to create unique, body movement challenges that will challenge climbers physically, and mentally.

Ropes

Roped climbing provides climbers with a more traditional experience where our staff show them how to use our rope systems to manage their risk.

We will start climbers off by teaching them how to properly attach themselves to our auto belay systems using harnesses we rent out. Staff will then provide an orientation to go over basic skills to ensure climbers are comfortable before getting out of their way to enjoy their session.

We provide classes to transition climbers to more advanced roped climbing techniques like traditional top ropes and lead climbing. For your first visit, we recommend starting with a simple auto belay experience, but an hour long top rope class can be scheduled with a climbing partner to kickstart their experience.

If you’re exclusively looking for a roped climbing experience, you’ll want to visit our South Boston and Boston-Dedham facilities in Massachusetts, our Lincoln and Peace Dale facilities in Rhode Island, or our Wallingford facility in Connecticut.

What to expect on your first visit

Waiver check

Being in a climbing facility presents significant risks so anyone entering our climbing areas MUST have a waiver on file. All locations have tablets to fill out waivers in the facility, but we recommend filling them out in advance online using the links on this page or at the top of our site.

Day pass or membership?

The simplest way to gain access to any facility is to purchase a day pass.

Day passes can be purchased upon arrival, or you can purchase them in advance using the link below and if you’d like to transition to punch passes or membership, you can always upgrade your day pass the same day and use what you paid towards the upgrade!

Facility orientation

Once we’ve confirmed everyone has waivers and climbers are checked in, our staff will provide a facility orientation to review our policies, go over facility amenities, and teach the fundamentals so climbers can manage their risk before climbing on their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do you have to be to climb?

We do not have a minimum age requirement. We require that all climbers are out of diapers. Our auto belays have a minimum weight requirement of 22 pounds and a maximum weight requirement of 330 pounds.

Do I need to make a reservation?

You do not! All Rock Spot Climbing locations are walk-in facilities and are ready to accommodate new and returning climbers during all open hours. Come on in!

What should I wear?

Wear clothes you are comfortable moving around in. Athletic apparel, leggings, sweatpants, shorts, tanks, tees – anything that doesn’t restrict your leg or arm movements. Harnesses have two leg straps to step into so opt for pants or shorts and not skirts or dresses. We provide rental shoes if you do not have your own climbing shoes, so bring or wear socks!

My child is climbing, but I’m not. Do I need to pay to enter?

No! Only those who are climbing need to purchase day passes. Any supervisors, chaperones, or spectators do not need to pay to enter. However, anyone entering the gym will need a current waiver on file.

Is there someone there to help a child who is climbing?

We always have a staff member who can give you an orientation, show you how to use our gear and equipment, and get you comfortable using the gym on your own. After your safety orientation, you will be responsible for supervising any children in your group or yourself while you climb. Children under 12 require someone who is 12 or older to clip them into the auto belays.

Staff will remain available if you have questions while using the gym. If you would like to have a staff member belay for your group, please call the gym to schedule. Belayers must be reserved at least two weeks in advance.

Do I need to know how to belay/use the ropes/take a class?

No! We have self-service automatic belay systems in the gym. Auto belays have a tether that attaches to the climber and retracts as the climber moves up the wall, and then the auto belay will catch and lower the climber when they let go of the wall. You do not need any prior experience with auto belays or ropes – we will show you how to use them!

I’m the grandparent/aunt/uncle/older sibling. Can I fill out the waiver?

Waivers for minors must be filled out by their parents or legal guardians. The waiver is a legal document required by the insurance company and the signing adult will have legal responsibility over the minor for the length of the waiver.

I’ve been there before. Do I need to sign a new waiver?

Waivers expire 1 year after being signed. If your waiver is more than 1 year old, you will be asked to sign a new one before entering the gym.

Can a child go to the gym with someone who is not their legal guardian?

Absolutely! A legal guardian can fill out a waiver online for their child(ren) at rockspotclimbing.com/waiver , and the staff at the gym will be able to pull that waiver in if a child goes to the gym with another chaperone. Make sure the legal guardian clicks the link in the confirmation email to confirm the waiver!

How old do you have to be to be at the gym by yourself?

All climbers 14 and under need someone who is age 17 or older in the gym to supervise them.

Do I need climbing shoes?

Climbing shoes are required on our walls. If you do not have your own climbing shoes, rentals are available at the gym.
